Specifically, I’ll be devoting the rest of this particular post to the “(some)” qualifier in the previous paragraph. And early reviews of the under-development “Insider” versions have generally been quite positive regarding the refreshed (and dare I say, MacOS-reminiscent) user interface and other advancements.ĭive into the system requirements details, however, and the bloom quickly fades from the rose, as the saying goes. Speaking of emulation, Android apps will run natively on Windows 11, reminiscent of Chrome OS’s already-existent Android support (Windows 10, like Chrome OS, already natively supports Linux VMs). It also beefs up Windows’ support for Arm processors (and the systems containing them)-see the video below (“ Surface Pro X with Windows 11”)-reportedly including more robust emulation of x86 64-bit code (see “ Windows on Arm: All of Apple’s challenges with none of its charm”). There’s much to like about the new operating system version, at least at first glance: it’ll be a free upgrade for (some) existing Windows 10 users, for one thing, although the update version won’t be available until sometime next year. On June 24, Microsoft announced Windows 11, forecasted to be ready “in time for the holiday season” (evidence suggests it may start shipping on computers in October):
Unfortunately, however, it appears that I apparently now need to start lumping Microsoft in with the others.
Unlike Apple, Microsoft has decided to not be as mercenary in culling old hardware from the new operating system support list, and has inherited a substantial burden in the process. I don’t at all discount Microsoft’s tremendous challenge in needing to comprehend the mind-blowing number of not only new but also legacy systems stretching back many years, and in a variety of form factors. Conversely, I’ve regularly praised the “ extensive backwards-compatible code ecosystem” cultivated by Microsoft and its x86 and other hardware partners: When (regularly, unfortunately) writing about obsolescence by design-specifically the “angle” wherein perfectly good hardware is prematurely done in by a manufacturer’s refusal to continue supporting it with evolutions in associated operating systems and other software-I’ve historically called out Apple as a primary villain.
